Memorial Day Weekend Fun

We had quite the weekend over Memorial Day. Friday after Roland got home from work, we packed up the car and drove out to Roosevelt Lake. We met Grandma and Grandpa Romero out there. Weston loved where we stayed. There was an enclosed outdoor patio and he kept running in and out of the house screaming "boo!" to the dogs. He was having so much fun that he didn't even settle down for bed until after 11pm. I don't know where he gets the energy!

Saturday morning we woke up to cold and rain. We were all kind of bummed since we were supposed to head out on the lake. It didn't stop Weston though. He continued to run around the house after the dogs and even convinced Daddy to take him for a walk. They walked down to the docks and checked out the fish. Eventually the sun came out and we headed out to the water.

We now know that we won't attempt this again until the kids are a little older. Both of them absolutely detested their life vests. They were a little big on both of them so Weston had the top of his up by his ears and he kept chewing on the side. He couldn't walk either. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen. He would try his best to walk, then would teeter over and would be helpless on the floor since he couldn't bend his body. Natalie was not much happier. It was way too big for her and enveloped her entire body. She protested quite loudly each time we put it on her.
Eventually they both calmed down a bit and Natalie even fell asleep for a little while once the boat got moving. I think between the rocking and the humming of the motor, she just didn't stand a chance. Weston started to have a little more fun once he was not so spooked by the boat. He even went out on the tube with Daddy. Roland says he didn't really seem all that excited by it but he sure let us know once it was time to be over. Roland then went out by himself, which Weston did not like one bit. He was screaming for his Daddy the entire time he was out there. I just had to keep soothing him and tell him that Daddy was okay.

I think Weston's favorite part was holding the flag on the way back to the docks while Aunt Andrea was in the water. He thought that was the absolute greatest!

When we got back to land, we packed the car once again and headed down to Tucson. Poor Natalie was having a rough time equalizing the pressure in her ears as we went up and down in elevation. She screamed the majority of the way. I felt so bad for her - too bad she won't take a pacifier! By the time we got close to Oro Valley, Natalie had been screaming for over and hour and a half and Weston had joined her for the last half hour or so. He was getting so frustrated with her because he was trying to sleep. He kept leaning over to her and putting his finger to his lips saying "shh!"

Needless to say, we were a little frazzled and ready to be out of the car. Of course, as always, we noticed our turn at Tangerine Road just as we were passing the intersection. Roland slammed on the brakes (not really sure why he was trying to still make it) and tried to swerve onto the road. We hit rocks and skidded. We stopped just in front of the opposing lane and Roland slowly crept the car over to the other lane of traffic. Of course, this was all done right in front of a cop. We didn't even wait for the cop, Roland just pulled over to the side of the road. Luckily, the cop was very friendly and understanding and let us go. And of course, the kids had stopped screaming the minute the cop pulls up to the window. Don't know how much he believed our screaming kids story at that point. Thanks a lot kids!

Sunday we used as a recover day. We went to church and took a much needed nap. Roland got caught up on his homework, then family came over to visit. Weston and Brendan had a blast running around outside (they don't quite understand the concept of resting on Sunday). They played golf and threw the basketball around. Eventually, the pool got involved and pretty soon both boys were naked and splashing in the water. You just could not keep them away from that pool!

Monday brought more fun in the sun. We were celebrating Dad's birthday which was on Saturday. We enjoyed a barbecue and swimming with the family. Natalie had her very first swim and did really well. She enjoyed the water and was content as usual to just be held. Weston didn't seem to be enjoying the water as much as he did the night before. We struggled to get him to really enjoy the water. He played ball with Brendan, Daddy, and Uncle Christopher for a little while but called it quits after just a short time. Since then, he has become much more comfortable with the water.

Once again, we packed up the car and were on our way home. In the evening, we visited shortly with Grandma and Grandpa Brown as well as Uncle Lincoln and Aunt Sariah. What a great way to end an exciting and fun weekend!

  1. Just reading this makes me tired. I'm surprised you ever have the courage to leave the house! And those lifejackets are terrible/hilarious (especially when I think our pool expects Seth to swim in one of those suckers. Yeah right).

  2. That's why I only leave the house when Roland comes with us! :) Yeah, that is really silly that they expect Seth to swim in that - there is absolutely no swimming involved - only lifesaving.
