It all started with a bedtime story about Franklin the turtle. Franklin wanted a pet. He continuously begged his parents for a pet and set out to prove that he was responsible enough to care for that pet. During the book he also discusses with each of his friends what pets they would each like. In the end, his parents agree he can have a pet so they go to the pet store. Franklin chose a goldfish. The ending picture is Franklin looking lovingly at his new little goldfish named "Goldie" in his little round fish bowl.
The next morning Weston informs me that he wants a pet. Not just any pet, a fish. I told him that we could go to the pet store on Saturday to look at fish. He was pleased.
Saturday arrived and we certainly did not forget about the pet store. We walked in the doors and headed to the fish tanks. Weston knew exactly what he wanted. I quickly realized we were not leaving the pet store without a fish. He ran to the goldfish and told us "that one!" Unfortunately, I was not aware that goldfish required large tanks or they die. Fabulous.
We spent about an hour in the pet store deliberating back and forth on what we would do. We had not really thought any of this through. We were thinking we would grab a goldfish, grab a bowl, and grab a jar of food. Nope.
We tried to convince Weston to get a little betta fish because that is the only fish that could survive in a little bowl. But, he wanted a goldfish. What a dilemma.
While we thought this through, we wandered about. Natalie was fascinated with the birds. She sat on my shoulders and "played" with the bird in the cage for a really long time. She tried to tweet like the birds and laughed hysterically every time the bird looked at her or climbed with its beak. She was having the time of her life.
We finally decided to go with the betta fish. Weston was pleased once he realized he could still have his little fish bowl that "matched" the one Franklin had. So, he was willing to give a little on the actual fish itself. He picked out the little blue rocks and the two plants that would go inside the bowl as well. Given the choice between a red fish and a blue fish, he chose the red one - quite emphatically too!
Weston held his little fish bowl all the way home. He was excited to welcome his new little buddy into our home. Both Weston and Natalie took turns "feeding" the fish. We let them shake the closed fish food bottle over his bowl. They loved feeling so important.
Natalie was beside herself because she couldn't touch, hold, and cuddle the fish. She was so frustrated with us! Looking at the fish was certainly not enough for her!
I asked Weston what the fish's name was. He thought for a really long time and informed me, "Westy!" Thinking it may be a little confusing to have two Westys in the house, Roland suggested we name the fish Franklin. This was agreed upon but Weston has yet to call him Franklin. He prefers "Goldfish" or "Baby."
Weston made sure to pray for his little fish before going to bed that night and also wanted to make sure he was okay with plenty of food. He blew him kisses and checked on him several times before he finally felt it was okay to leave him alone and go to sleep. This morning the first thing he did was run and check to make sure his little fish was awake. He fed him and talked to him and doted over him. Little "Franklin/Goldfish/Baby" was even special enough to receive the "SURPRISE!" morning wake up call (Weston will run up to you and yell "surprise!" to wake you up in the morning).

So, I think Franklin/Goldfish/Baby is here to stay. It was about time for another Brown to join our family and this was a lot faster, easier, cheaper, and less stressful than the alternative. So, welcome fishy!
