It's kind of funny because it seems as if Weston has been two for the past several months, but it is now official. Weston has always seemed so grown up to me, even when he was a baby. I attribute it to his independent spirit and strong will. He has picked up on everything so quickly and his skill level in everything he does seems so advanced for his age (or this could just be proud mommy talking). So, the fact that he just barely turned two on Tuesday has me a little shocked in a way. Seems like it has been a long time coming.
We celebrated his birthday this past Saturday in Tucson with family. I will share this experience in an upcoming post. We had a lot of fun. The really funny part is that I made cupcakes and somehow Weston determined in his mind that "birthday" meant "cupcake." He ran around the house saying "birth-day, birth-day!" all day. When he woke up Tuesday morning, I told him "Happy Birthday!" and he immediately began repeating birthday and searching around for his cupcake. So, we celebrated Tuesday night with some cupcakes and now we have to be super careful about the use of the word birthday around him! :)
The day itself was pretty laid back. He played with toys, watched some cartoons, took a nap, and went to the park. All in all, a pretty normal, but fun day. I am excited to have my little two year old, but with it is coming the terrible two fits. Granted, he has been throwing them for the past few months, but now it seems to have taken on a whole new level. You see, he is now TWO, so he must let everyone know it! ;) I love his little independent spirit!
As far as stats go, he will have his appointment later this month and we will have all of the details, but he is a pretty normal two year old. He loves blocks, cars, trains, balls, animals, rough housing, and being a big brother. Anytime he hears the train by our house, he sits quietly and listens while screaming "TRAIN! TRAIN!" When we travel and see a train, he perks up with excitement when he sees one, then says "bye train, bye train!" when it leaves. He is too funny. Car rides are always entertaining as he proceeds to tell me about every "truck" and "bus" that he sees with great enthusiasm. "McQueen" is quite the staple in his vocabulary and is a favorite in movies and in choice of cars to play with. He is just a little obsessed but it is cute.
Weston loves his animals. He can point out and name (as well as make the sounds to) a cow, duck, horse, sheep, pig, dog, mouse, lion (and tiger for that matter), bird, fish, bee, butterfly (currently just called an "eye") and of course a monkey. We are still working on a cat. He sees a cat and calls it a mouse for the time being. One day he may catch on that it is in fact different. He also knows what a dinosaur is and refers to them as "aurs." Elephants make me laugh the most. He just calls them "animals." He can not seem to grasp that its name is an elephant, not an animal. I blame Little Einsteins. He learned from them.
His vocabulary blows me away every day. He has been babbling since I can remember - always has something to say! His communication skills over the past month or two though have just soared. He has more words in his vocabulary than I can even begin to name. He picks up new ones every day. Everything he sees must be named to him, then he repeats it after I say it. This has caused him to pick up words at an incredible pace. He shocks me daily with the words he knows. His clarity in speech is getting a lot better too. Many of his words are pronounced perfectly now, although much of his speech is still babble. Although his communication has dramatically improved, his listening skills are still a bit lacking. He oftentimes chooses to ignore the fact that I am even speaking to him and "conveniently" doesn't hear me when we are at the park and it is time to go home. We are still working on that one.
Weston loves his alone time with Mommy and Daddy. When he has had a rough day or has been a little overstimulated, he loves to cuddle up with Mommy or Daddy in a quiet room and read a book or sing silly songs. He also likes to unwind with Curious George, Little Einsteins, or WordWorld (all of his favorite shows). Weston loves music and loves singing. Hokey Pokey is so much fun for him to dance to. He usually skips around in a circle while patting his legs. He also loves to sing "The Wheels on the Bus." He even does all of the motions and even throws a few words in there. He always remembers to get the "town" in there at the end of the "all through the town." He also enjoys saying the "swish, swish, swish" for the wipers, "beep, beep, beep" for the horn, "back" for the "move on back" driver, "shh, shh, shh" mommy, and others. He is quite entertaining.
"If You're Happy and You Know It" is another favorite. He claps, stomps, and shouts "Hooray!" Other favorites are "Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Tiny Tim Turtle Song," and "The Monkeys in the Tree." Each come with their own motions and periodic spurts of words from Weston. He even knows most of "I am a Child of God" now and sings along from time to time.
My favorite part of watching Weston grow is to see him learn and explore new things. Seeing him make sense of new talents and new words is so exciting to me. I also love watching him play with Natalie. They are finally at the point where they can interact a little more. Weston often picks up her cup when she drops and hands it to her. He also gets concerned when Natalie falls over and either comes to find me and says "Nanny, Nanny" while pulling my hand to her, or he trys to pick her up himself. He is always very concerned when she is sad. The other day we were laying on the bed and he begins to rough house with her. He laid on top of her and both of them were looking at each other just laughing histerically. It is so fun to watch. He absolutely loves his little sister. This makes me happy.
